Edifier R1850DB Active Bookshelf Speakers

We believe in starting off our review list extremely strong and so we are going to be doing a review of some speakers from Edifier.

Now, those of you who aren’t all that familiar with the different speaker brands out there probably haven’t heard of Edifier before, but they are actually one of the best and most reliable brands out there when it comes to buying speakers.

They make very high-end speakers and we wanted to review one of their speaker sets that is, in our opinion, one of the absolute best that they have to offer in the form of the Edifier R1850DB Active Bookshelf Speakers.

So, what exactly is it about these speakers that makes them good enough to be included on this review list? Well, for starters, they sound amazing.

We know that one could say this about a lot of high-end speakers but trust us when we say that these are actually some of the best sounding speakers that you are going to find on the market right now, at least for a setup that is centred around a vinyl record player.

Furthermore, the speaker has a lot of options for you to mess around with, so you can increase the treble or bass as needed; this really helps to amplify certain songs or music styles.

As you were probably expecting based on both the high-end brand of this speaker, as well as its overall quality, this is not an inexpensive product.

In fact, the Edifier R1850DB is actually one of the most expensive, if not the overall most expensive, speaker sets that we will be reviewing. If you are looking for the absolute best audio quality possible, then this is the set for you. Those seeking something a bit cheaper will want to look elsewhere.

  • Pros
  • Amazing sound quality.
  • Great Bluetooth functionality.
  • Lots of different treble and bass options.
  • Cons
  • Some of the most expensive speakers that we will be reviewing on this list.

Klipsch R-41M Bookshelf Home Speaker Set

The next speaker set that we wanted you to take a look at on our best speakers for vinyl review list is the Klipsch R-41M Bookshelf Home Speaker Set. This is a really big, but very high-quality speaker set. It doesn’t have a ton of weaknesses and it delivers fairly good sound quality. So, you can probably see why it is a natural option for inclusion on this list.

First and foremost, we want to talk about the audio quality of this speaker set. Like all great speaker sets, it is very powerful. It has a RMS power output of around 200 watts. When combined with both its great internal components and its 90 dB sensitivity, you have a speaker set that delivers great audio at a relatively decent price.

It isn’t a cheap speaker, but it isn’t super expensive either, but you wouldn’t know that from the sound quality. As we said earlier, there just aren’t any real weaknesses in the overall design of the Klipsch.

Everything, both inside and outside of the speaker, has been designed nearly to perfection. It is perfect for basically any sort of vinyl player setup or really any other type of audio setup.

Our biggest (no pun intended) complaint about these speakers has to do with their immense size. Given the nature of this review list, you are going to see a lot of (and indeed you have seen a lot of) very large speakers.

However, we have to admit that even by the very large standards of this list, the Klipsch R-41M Bookshelf Home Speaker Set really stands out as being exceptionally large. So, either make sure you have some room for this speaker set or go for one of the slightly smaller options that we have reviewed.

  • Pros
  • Great overall design.
  • Not too pricey.
  • Very good audio quality.
  • Cons
  • Speakers are bulkier than average.

Sony SSCS5 3-Way 3-Driver Bookshelf Speaker System

The next speaker set that we want to review is from one of the masters of audio technology, Sony. When a brand is as well-known as they are, one can hardly ever go wrong with one of their products and the Sony SSCS5 3-Way 3-Driver Bookshelf Speaker is a good example of this. It is a great speaker that is perfect for a wide variety of different audio setups.

With an intuitive design and around 100 watts of RMS power, the Sony SSCS5 is just a very good sounding speaker that you can rely on to do your favourite music justice. Furthermore, it has this nice, relatively compact design, so it can easily fit into a wide variety of cabinets and furniture spaces.

The only real “weakness” of this speaker system comes when you look at its price. It isn’t too expensive as far as truly high-end speakers go, but when you compare it to a lot of the other entries that we have reviewed on this list, you start to see that it does cost a bit more than average.

  • Pros
  • Relatively compact.
  • Can easily fit into lots of different audio setups.
  • Great overall sound quality.
  • Good at playing lots of different types of music.
  • 100 watts of RMS power.
  • Cons
  • Like a lot of Sony speakers, this can be a bit pricey.

Audioengine A2+ Plus Wireless Speaker

For this next review on our best speakers for vinyl list, we are going to take a look at the Audioengine A2+ Plus Wireless Speaker.

By now you are familiar enough with our best speakers for vinyl review list to have a good idea of what to expect from any speaker being review on it.

Like every other entry that we have reviewed, the Audioengine is well-made, sounds great, and has a ton of very useful audio options to customize your listening experience, what more could one ask for in a speaker?

A very good and useful feature of this speaker set that we specifically want to draw your attention to is the Bluetooth functionality of this speaker set.

We wanted to draw our readers’ attention to this feature specifically because we haven’t reviewed a lot of Bluetooth speakers yet, but this can be a very useful feature as it lets you connect your speaker to various music streaming services, as well as different audio devices.

  • Pros
  • Bluetooth streaming ability.
  • Nice aesthetic red design.
  • Sounds amazing.
  • Cons
  • Takes quite a bit to get set up.

Edifier R980T Active Bookshelf Speakers

For the final review on our best speakers for vinyl list, we are once again doing a review of a speaker set from Edifier. Those of you who have taken the time to read our review list from the very beginning will no doubt remember that we started off the article by taking a look at a very high-end Edifier speaker (the Edifier R1850DB).

While we really liked that product, we also have to admit that in terms of price, it did leave a lot to be desired. Thankfully, those of you who want to give Edifier speakers a try, but who don’t want to spend a ton of money can check out this next product, the Edifier R980T Active Bookshelf Speakers.

As you might guess just based on our introduction, the main attraction of these speakers has to do with the fact that they offer good performance on an extremely budget friendly price. Unlike a lot of other Edifier speaker sets, which can be extremely pricey, the R980T is very easy on your wallet as it only costs around $70 or so.

At the same time, this speaker doesn’t compromise too much when it comes to audio quality. It may not be as expensive as a lot of the other Edifier speakers, but it can almost match them both in terms of number of features offered and the overall audio quality of the speakers.

  • Pros
  • One of the cheaper Edifier speaker options out there.
  • Manages to keep a lot of their signature features and quality.
  • Good overall design.
  • Decent RMS output.
  • Cons
  • Not quite as well-made as the other Edifier speaker set.

Speaker for Vinyl Player Buying Guide

Buying different kinds of speakers isn’t too tricky because at the end of the day, regardless of what application they are barest suited for, the majority of speakers are built roughly the same.

So, if you have ever bought any speaker before, then you will likely have enough experience to buy a good speaker for use with your vinyl record player. However, we still wanted to include this buying guide to help supplement our review list above. We will be focusing on the important things that you can use to distinguish a good speaker from one that isn’t worth your time or money.

Understanding Speaker Power Output

By far the most important thing to understand when trying to buy a speaker set is its power output since this has an absolutely huge impact on how good the speaker sounds.

Now, this may seem like a weird way to phrase it, but actually understanding how power works on a speaker can be a bit complex since there are a lot of numbers and terms that one needs to know and it is never quite clear what the terms are supposed to mean or what numbers are important. That is what we want to go over in this first part of our buying guide.

The first term that you will want to understand is RMS, which stands for root means square. The easiest way to explain this is that RMS is the average or “real” power output of a speaker.

Speakers will typically advertise a bunch of different power outputs (minimum, maximum, etc.) but the only one that we would really recommend paying attention to RMS, since that gives you the best idea of the consistent performance level that you will be getting out of this speaker.

The other numbers aren’t completely irrelevant (maximum power output can be helpful for gauging the quality of a speaker) but they just aren’t as important.

Know The Area That You Are Working With

While this may be self-explanatory to some, we want to take this opportunity to remind you out there reading this article that you should be familiar with the area that you are going to be putting the speakers into.

What do we mean by this? Well, there are a few things that you should know. First off, what is the general sound profile of the room that you are going to be using the speakers in?

Depending on the material that the walls are made out of, they might either absorb sound or bounce it back at you, this will impact what type of speakers you should be getting. Secondly, you want to think about potential space considerations.

Again, you probably already know this, but everyone has extremely different room setups and it is up to you to make sure that the speaker that you get can fit into your room of choice.

So, it might be helpful if, before you start shopping for a speaker, you take the time to do some quick measurements around your room to figure out exactly how big of a speaker you can get.

You may be curious if going for a larger speaker is worth it and we just want to affirm that yes, it most definitely is. Larger speakers tend to be a lot better when it comes to sound quality.

This is because they are able to fit in more, better quality components that boost the overall sound quality. So, if you have the space for a larger speaker, it is certainly worth it.

The Importance Of Bookshelf Speakers

Something that some of you may have picked up on when reading through our best speakers for vinyl review list is the fact that a lot of the speakers that we reviewed on our list were called bookshelf speakers and you may be curious what that means.

Well, to put it simply, bookshelf speakers are some of the most common speakers that you find being used for things like turntables or vinyl record player setups. The reason why is because they are designed to be rested on things or put inside of furniture, which is why a lot of people love to use them for their vinyl records, since you can just put them right on your vinyl shelf.

While there are many other good types of speakers out there, we will also say that most of you will probably be most satisfied with a good bookshelf speaker.

The Concept Of Speaker Sensitivity

Continuing on with our trend of explaining important things that we discussed a lot on our review list, we want to discuss another thing that got brought up at least a few times in this article, which is the concept of speaker sensitivity.

We mentioned a lot how sensitive certain speakers were, but we didn’t quite go into what that means for you. The easiest way to explain it is that a speaker’s sensitivity is a measure of how well a speaker turns raw power into audio.
A more sensitive speaker is going to not only sound better, but also deliver a wider, more diverse array of sounds. This will allow you to better appreciate the music that you are listening to.

Something That You May Be Interested In

Before we finish off this buying guide (and sadly, our article along with it), we want to tell those of you reading this article something that you may find interesting, which is that you can actually buy combo products (meaning the vinyl player and speaker are attached as one package).

Now, we didn’t review any of these combo products on our best speakers for vinyl list because we wanted to review individual speakers.

However, on the off chance that you are browsing this list without having first gotten a vinyl player (or if you happen to have one that you are willing to replace) then you may want to check out some combination vinyl players and speakers.
